Het is alweer even geleden dat ik een update deelde over de Battle of the Bulge Hiking Trail, maar het werk blijft intussen onverminderd doorgaan. Twee jaar geleden schreef ik in mijn laatste bericht dat ik zo’n 360 kilometer had verkend, waarvan ik er uiteindelijk 240 à 250 zou opnemen in de trail. Inmiddels is dat totaal al opgelopen tot meer dan 700 kilometer verkenning.

Mijn meest recente verkenningstocht bracht me naar Bastogne. De verdediging van deze stad werd tijdens het Ardennenoffensief breed uitgemeten in de geallieerde pers, al had ze op strategisch vlak niet meteen een doorslaggevende impact op het verloop van het offensief. Sinds het begin van deze eeuw kreeg Bastogne opnieuw veel aandacht, vooral dankzij de miniserie Band of Brothers, waarin het verhaal van Easy Company van het 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, centraal staat. In die reeks speelt Bastogne een hoofdrol.

De schuttersputjes in het Bois Jacques, waar Easy Company destijds positie innam, zijn intussen goed gedocumenteerd en vaak bezocht. Zo vaak zelfs dat de autoriteiten het bos enkele jaren geleden hebben omheind en dat je tegenwoordig een toegangsticket voor het museum nodig hebt om het te kunnen bezoeken. Daarom richtte deze verkenning zich vooral op de westelijke en zuidelijke sector van de verdedigingsperimeter: de zones waar de 4th Armored Division op 26 december 1944 door de Duitse linies wist te breken, maar ook op de zwaar bevochten locaties in onder meer het Bois de Fragotte, Houmont, Assenois en Marvie. Deze locaties zijn minder bekend bij het grote publiek, maar daarom zeker niet minder interessant.

De sporen van het Ardennenoffensief zijn in deze regio nog alomtegenwoordig. De bossen zitten vol kraters en schuttersputjes, en op sommige gebouwen zijn nog steeds kogelinslagen te zien. Dat maakt de geschiedenis hier bijzonder tastbaar. Ondanks alle eerdere bezoeken blijft het confronterend om te beseffen dat je op exact dezelfde plekken staat waar 81 jaar geleden hevige gevechten plaatsvonden en mensen op leven en dood vochten

Niet elke historische locatie zal uiteindelijk in het wandeltraject worden opgenomen. Zo ligt de plek van het veldhospitaal van de 101st Airborne, ten westen van Bastogne aan de Barrière Hinck, te geïsoleerd ten opzichte van de andere historische sites. Bovendien is er vandaag niets meer van te zien, op een monument na. Daarvoor een wandelaar tientallen kilometers laten omwandelen vind ik een brug te ver. Zeker gezien de finale lengte van het pad, van meer dan 500 kilometer.

Tot slot kan ik nog meegeven dat het schrijven van de gids gestaag vooruitgaat. Maar ik ben ook maar een mens, en met de geboorte van mijn dochter ligt mijn aandacht voorlopig vooral bij mijn gezin. Het zal dus nog wel even duren voor er een afgewerkte gids in de boekhandel ligt.

Battle of the Bulge Hiking Trail – Update June 2026

It has already been some time since I last shared an update on the Battle of the Bulge Hiking Trail, but the work has continued steadily in the meantime. Two years ago, in my previous update, I wrote that I had explored around 360 kilometres, of which I intended to include roughly 240 to 250 kilometres in the final trail. Since then, that total has grown to more than 700 kilometres of reconnaissance.

My most recent fieldwork took me to Bastogne. The defense of this town during the Ardennes Offensive was widely reported in the Allied press, although it did not have a decisive strategic impact on the course of the offensive. Since the early 2000s, Bastogne has regained considerable attention, largely thanks to the miniseries Band of Brothers, which tells the story of Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. In that series, Bastogne plays a central role.

The foxholes in Bois Jacques, where Easy Company once held its positions, are now well documented and frequently visited. So frequently, in fact, that the authorities fenced off the forest a few years ago, and today a museum ticket is required to access it. For that reason, this reconnaissance focused mainly on the western and southern sectors of the defensive perimeter: the areas where the 4th Armored Division broke through German lines on 26 December 1944, as well as heavily contested locations such as Bois de Fragotte, Houmont, Assenois, and Marvie. These sites are less known to the general public, but no less interesting for that.

The traces of the Ardennes Offensive are still ubiquitous in this region. The forests are filled with shell craters and foxholes, and bullet impacts are still visible on some buildings. All of this makes the history here remarkably tangible. Despite many previous visits, it remains confronting to realise that you are standing on the very same ground where, 81 years ago, intense fighting took place and people fought each other on life and death.

Not every historical site will ultimately be included in the hiking route. The location of the 101st Airborne field hospital, west of Bastogne near Barrière Hinck, is too isolated in relation to the other historical sites. Moreover, little remains there today apart from a monument. Asking hikers to make a detour of several dozen kilometres for it feels like a bridge too far, especially given the final length of the trail, which will exceed 500 kilometres.

Finally, I can also share that the writing of the guide is steadily progressing. But I am only human, and with the birth of my daughter, my focus is currently mainly on my family. It will therefore still take some time before a finished guide reaches the bookstore.

Cela fait déjà un certain temps que je n’ai plus partagé de mise à jour concernant le Battle of the Bulge Hiking Trail, mais le travail se poursuit entre-temps sans relâche. Il y a deux ans, dans ma précédente mise à jour, j’écrivais avoir exploré environ 360 kilomètres, dont je comptais finalement en retenir entre 240 et 250 pour le tracé final. Depuis, ce total est passé à plus de 700 kilomètres de reconnaissances.

Ma plus récente sortie de terrain m’a conduit à Bastogne. La défense de cette ville pendant la bataille des Ardennes a été largement relayée dans la presse alliée, même si elle n’a pas eu d’impact stratégique décisif sur le déroulement de l’offensive. Depuis le début des années 2000, Bastogne a retrouvé une attention considérable, notamment grâce à la mini-série Band of Brothers, qui raconte l’histoire de la Easy Company du 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Dans cette série, Bastogne occupe une place centrale.

Les foxholes du Bois Jacques, où la Easy Company avait établi ses positions, sont aujourd’hui bien documentés et fréquemment visités. Si fréquemment, d’ailleurs, que les autorités ont clôturé le bois il y a quelques années, et qu’un ticket d’entrée pour le musée est désormais nécessaire pour y accéder. C’est pourquoi cette reconnaissance s’est principalement concentrée sur les secteurs ouest et sud du périmètre défensif : les zones où la 4th Armored Division a percé les lignes allemandes le 26 décembre 1944, ainsi que sur des lieux de combats intenses tels que le Bois de Fragotte, Houmont, Assenois et Marvie. Ces sites sont moins connus du grand public, mais n’en sont pas moins intéressants.

Les traces de la bataille des Ardennes sont encore omniprésentes dans cette région. Les forêts sont remplies de cratères et de foxholes, et des impacts de balles sont encore visibles sur certains bâtiments. Tout cela rend l’histoire ici particulièrement tangible. Malgré de nombreuses visites, il reste toujours saisissant de réaliser que l’on se tient exactement sur les mêmes lieux où, il y a 81 ans, des combats intenses ont eu lieu et où des hommes se sont affrontés dans une lutte à mort.

Tous les sites historiques ne seront finalement pas intégrés au parcours de randonnée. L’emplacement de l’hôpital de campagne de la 101st Airborne, à l’ouest de Bastogne près de la Barrière Hinck, est trop isolé par rapport aux autres sites historiques. De plus, il n’en reste aujourd’hui presque rien, à part un monument. Demander aux randonneurs de faire un détour de plusieurs dizaines de kilomètres me semble excessif, surtout compte tenu de la longueur finale du parcours, qui dépassera les 500 kilomètres.

Enfin, je peux également partager que la rédaction du guide progresse régulièrement. Mais je ne suis qu’un homme, et avec la naissance de ma fille, mon attention est actuellement principalement tournée vers ma famille. Il faudra donc encore un certain temps avant qu’un guide finalisé n’arrive en librairie.
