Day Hike: Loop hike Libramont (21,4 km)

Date: Saturday, January 2nd, 2021

Path: Own route + GR151

Distance: 21,4 km

Ascent: 239m

Descent: 239m

In Belgium, you can find snow not only in the High Fens or on the Baraque de Fraiture, but also on the high plateau of Libramont. This plateau is not only quite vast and much larger in surface than the High Fens, but also less known by the average day-tripper and therefore you can enjoy the snow in many quiet places. For this hike I mapped out my own route, supplemented by a part on the GR151 trail.

I start this loop at the Libramont train station and follow the trail counter-clockwise. First I have to cross what is historically the centre of Libramont, passing by the church with its striking tower and the Musée des Celtes. Since 1977 Libramont has been a subdivision of the much larger Libramont-Chevigny. In terms of surface area, it is the fifth largest municipality in Belgium (after Tournai, Couvin, Antwerp and Chimay).

It is only after three kilometres that you leave the built-up area at Neuvillers and are presented with the magnificent snowy landscape of the Ardennes. The fact that the E411 motorway has to be crossed twice is of secondary importance here. After the first crossing, the snow is 25 to 30 centimetres high and when you dive a bit further into the woods, you are submerged in the beauty of the snow. And that will last for kilometres! The GR151 trail joins us after some 11,5 kilometres and leads us through a beautiful piece of nature that is just as good as the snow covered Hautes Fagnes.

From the village of Sberchamps on it enters the urban area again, but nevertheless it still passes beautiful landscapes! In Presseux you can either follow the road to the train station, or take the GR57 through the forest of Bonance and along the old monastery. Unlike the attached GPX, I walked through the forest with even more snow.
